George Calombaris landed himself in hot water last week when it was revealed that nearly 200 staff members at his restaurants have been underpaid $2.6 million, with the celebrity chef blaming “historically poor processes” for the bungle.
Of Calombaris’ current staff, 162 of the 430 at restaurants including The Press Club, Gazi and Hellenic Republic were not paid the correct salaries or overtime due to the “poor processes” Calombaris said.
The MasterChef judge said he was “devastated” by the blunder, which will see affected employees backpaid an average of approximately $16,000 each.
How can we learn from Calombaris’ mistakes?
Underpaying staff wages is not something to be taken lightly. As was the case with Calombaris, it will cost businesses with poor processes thousands of dollars in backpay, as well as additional expenses involved with carrying out payroll audits, not to mention the unpaid liabilities uncalculated and not budgeted for.
